Modernism Week

What better way to spend February than in sunny, warm Palm Springs enjoying its world renowned mid-century modern architecture.  From February 10-21,2010,  Palm Springs hosts its 5th annual Modernism Week.  Modernism Week, the only such event in the country, is an exciting 9-day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture. They will not only have double decker bus tours of the architecture, but they also have fashion shows, a vintage car show to keep the husbands happy, a movie screening at the legendary Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms estate, a vintage airstream show, coctail parties, and the chance (or maybe dream) of owning amazing mid-century furniture, jewelry, art and accessories at the modernism show and silent auction.

This event sounds like so much fun.  Not only do you get to see the amazing mid-century architecture of the area (you atomic ranch fans would be so excited), but you can climb aboard an open air bus for a three hour tour (and no it doesn't end like Gilligan's Island).

You'll learn the history of local architecture and the celebrated architects that put modernism on the map. You'll also see first-hand why Palm Springs is ground zero for mid-century modern architecture. I have definately convinced myself that I need to go to this.  Now to convince the husband to take me.

They are having an event where you not only get a rare opportunity to see the residence of the late modernist architect Albert Frey at his "Frey II" as it's called,  but you can get a 45 minute guided tour of this tiny 1,000 square foot gem that is perched on a mountain above downtown Palm Springs.  And the best part (in my mind at least) is that you can pay a little bit more (ok quite a bit more, this is California but well worth it) to pretend you are back in the Hollywood heyday of 1950's Palm Springs at coctail parties in the homes of Hollywood legends like Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, and Liz Taylor.  What mid-century enthusiast wouldn't want to travel back in time for a week to the mecca of mid century splendor?
